The Tony Awards will air tonight at 8pm on CBS…. this is the Grammys of the Broadway/theater world and us artsy folks couldn’t be more excited!! This year’s award show is setting a precedent because Hamilton has been nominated for an impressive 16 awards!! And with that said, I want to share this viral video of James Corden doing his hilariously written skit of “Carpool Karaoke” with Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton, Audra McDonald, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Jane Krakowski sing showtunes, including “One Day More” from Les Miserables.
This is the best way to get in the mood for tonight’s show!!! As a dancer myself, I love me some Broadway… maybe it’s the choreographic freedom, the lights, the flashy costumes, the extravagant makeup and scenery, or that the storyline comes to life with the movement on such a large stage…. GGGAAAAHHHHH!! My heart is bursting with excitement right now!! #PopStyle #TonyAwards #Hamilton #Broadway

Its National Tap Dance Day 2016!!!!
I posted a video of Syncopated Ladies tap dancing to “Formation” by Beyonce a few weeks ago. I noted how they carried the musicality of the song with excellent tap dance technique, stage presence, entertainment value, and sheer fierceness all while executing a somewhat dying art form (I hate to admit that as tap dance runs through my blood. But not many people are doing it nowadays).
Well leave it to Chloe Arnold and the Syncopated Ladies to pay tribute to the Purple Majesty himself, Prince, in the best way they know how… with their Art. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you “When Doves Cry- Prince Tribute”
#PopStyle #popculture #dance #dancerslife #tapdance #Prince #PurpleMajesty #popenthusiasm #tribute
Beyonce is no stranger to having her songs choreographed too and used for performances, but rarely is there a dance cover that showcase TAP DANCE!!! Yes!! FINALLY!! Tap dancers showing their unique skill, hardwork, musicality, entertainment quality, and value in this world of hip hop covers. (granted I love the hip hop covers, but can a tap dancer like myself get some love?) So I present the viral video of Syncopated Ladies cover of “Formation.”
This video went so viral about 2 months ago that Syncopated Ladies were even asked to perform on Good Morning America AND perform in London for the debut of Beyonce’s activewear line Blue Ivy at Top Shop. I guess it’s better late than never for people to see the worth of tap dancing. Til next time… Keep it #PopStyle
I love these 2 dudes videos!! They are 2 of the 5 members of the group Pentatonix (an acapella group who got it’s initial fame from the show the Sing Off). Pentatonix seriously has talent and their rendition os classic pop, hip hop, Star Wars scores, Christmas music, and original songs are uncontested!! Check them out!!
Back to Superfruit…. they made Broadway versions of some of the most popular hip hop tracks of 2015 and they are super catchy!! Im listing part 1 and part 2 of their videos because they are best when watched back to back! My faves include:
Hip Hop Goes Broadway Part 1
“Pills and Potions” sounds like a real Broadway song!
Hip Hop Goes Broadway Part 2
Bobby Shrmurda- Lion King rendition on fleek!
“Blessed”- it’s now a ballad!!
“Energy”- better than the original version
Lately I’ve been pretty obsessed with the art of tutting and finger tutting. I am choreographing a dance for my hip hop class using tutting as the basis. In my research on making patterns, I stumbled on this amazing video by Pnut. The way he intricately moves his fingers to the rhythm and underling melody of the song “Fast and Sad” by Ivarelli, is beautiful. Who would have known a dance inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphics would be so mesmerizing and graceful? Enjoy!! And til next time, keep it #PopStyle 🙂
Good evening PopStylers!! Another week is upon us and another Dance Viral Video is in store for you! I am LOVIN’ this new Adele #25 album so of course “Hello” is on constant repeat. It’s sure to be a hit in dance concerts, competitions, recitals, and lyrical classes everywhere! (I’ve already played through the whole album in my classes at school for a yoga day. Shrug)
Anyways, I saw this video on Facebook and it blew my mind. Imagine the powerful vocals and haunting melody with controlled, smooth, and direct movement of 3 street style dancers… Epic! The muscle control and shapes made by their bodies is enough to make any dancer appreciate how versatile dancers need to be. This goes to show you ….. That song selection doesn’t determine how you dance. The movement will speak for itself regardless of the song. Enjoy!! And til next time keep it #PopStyle
Kinjaz- Hello dance video
Good evening Pop-Stylers!! It was so hard to choose just 1 Dance Viral Video (#DVV) for you to enjoy so I have chosen 2 as a result. I picked them for 2 reasons:
- I am choreographing the Kelly Clarkson cover of this song now for my intermediate level dance class at school
- I am waiting with bated breath on the release of #Anti from Rihanna… any day now RiRi…. any day now….
So my 2 choices for #DVV is for “B*tch Better Have My Money”! The 1st is by Tricia Miranda of LA and the 2nd is by Royal Family of New Zealand. Both of their choreography and dancers give me life!! And it takes the song to a whole other level by lifting it past the club anthem and into a personal expression of artistry (especially the Royal Family mix). So enjoy these videos and til next time… Keep it #PopStyle
